Introduction

Orofacial pain. Headache.

Orofacial pain is pain felt in the mouth, face, jaw or temples. It describes where it hurts, not why it hurts: it can come from the teeth, the muscles, the joints or nerves, and it is sometimes felt far from its origin. So the first step is to find its source and refer you to another specialist if the cause is not dental.

When a dental assessment can help

Understanding the cause

It can be useful if pain appears when chewing or opening the mouth, is related to a tooth or coincides with jaw tension. Also if discomfort continues after previous treatments and you need to review what a new examination can contribute.

Your words help us understand the pain

Bring any reports you already have. If it helps, note a few episodes before coming, without provoking the pain to test it. Also tell us:

  • Location and onset.

  • Whether constant or episodic, and duration.

  • What changes when eating, talking, touching the area or moving the jaw.

  • Other symptoms and treatments you have tried.

When another clinical opinion is needed

Some shooting pains, changes in sensation, headaches or ear symptoms may need medical assessment. Depending on the case, it may be appropriate to see a family doctor, neurologist, ENT specialist or maxillofacial surgeon.
For persistent conditions, pain care may involve several professionals. Considering psychological support or a pain clinic does not mean the symptoms are imaginary. The aim is to find an approach that suits what is happening to you.
.

How I assess symptoms. Personally.

We discuss when and how the pain started, its course, previous treatments, injuries, medication and sleep. Also what is difficult for you and how you are doing. Stress can contribute but does not explain all pain alone.

Can a tooth hurt even if the cause is elsewhere?

Yes. Pain can be felt far from its source. Before intervening, it must be checked whether the examination supports a cause in that tooth.

Can the jaw be related to headaches?

Yes, some temporomandibular disorders can cause pain in the temples. Identifying and treating these problems can help relieve discomfort.

Does a splint help with any facial pain?

Puede ser útil en algunos casos, según la causa del dolor. Lo importante es elegir el tratamiento adecuado para cada persona.

Would a consultation help guide your next steps?

Una consulta puede ayudarte a comprender mejor tus síntomas y conocer los siguientes pasos. Cuéntanos qué te preocupa y cómo te afecta en tu día a día.
